Joseph's first-half strike - a left-footed effort from just inside the box that fizzed into the bottom corner - was Wigan's only effort on target.

But the way the team laid their collective bodies on the line at the other end, and ran their blood to water, meant they were great value for all three points.

Jamie Jones was required to make a couple of decent saves, but the defence successfully kept at arm's length a promotion-chasing Sunderland side including Will Grigg and Max Power.

The win is not enough to move Latics off the foot of the League One table, but it did make a huge statement that, regardless of the off-field strife, the club remains united on the pitch.
