'This is our last chance' to stop Euro Super League

Andy Burnham has called for a ‘cross-party campaign to reclaim the game for supporters’ – which he believes represents the ‘last chance’ of preventing the impending damage to football.

The Mayor of Greater Manchester, and former Leigh MP, wants immediate action with two of the six Premier League clubs intending to break away and join the European Super League based on his patch.

“The unanimity of opposition to the #europeansuperleague is something to behold,” he tweeted. “BUT it can’t just be about stopping it.

“Instead, we need a cross-party campaign to reclaim the game for supporters, with independent regulation of ownership and finances. This is our last chance.”

Burnham also referenced the opposition to the ill-fated ‘Game 39’ – which would have seen an additional round of Premier League action being played overseas – as proof that fan power can overcome money and greed.

“Remember Game 39 anyone?” he added. “Just a little reminder that mad, money-grabbing proposals can actually be stopped.

“That phrase ‘the game’s gone’ always used to annoy me. But with VAR and now this, nothing else better sums up where we are.

“It’s the phrase of the day. #TheGamesGone.”

Local MP Yvonne Fovargue also shared an open letter circulated by the Labour Party aimed at stopping the venture in its track.

“A small number of football clubs in England are attempting to stitch up competition for a few elite clubs at the top,” the release read.

“That’s why we’re calling for the Competition and Markets Authority to investigate whether they can intervene. And if not, we want Government to legislate to stop it happening.

“We urge fans across the country to add their names to our letter and show the groundswell of feeling against these damaging proposals, that would do immense damage both to football and communities across the country.”
