Administrators in charge of the League One outfit pulled the plug on a deal with the Spanish bidders, led by Leganes owner Felipe Moreno, after they halved their offer. They said proceeding would have resulted in a 15-point deduction.

It leaves Latics facing an uncertain future, but Wigan MP Nandy said: “This decision finally brings to an end three wasted months during which serious concerns about the bid remained unanswered and allows us to finally move forward.

“In recent months I have stayed in touch with a number of previous and potential bidders, many of whom have been in contact with me and others again.

"And I am very confident that a number of credible bids will be submitted now the process has been reopened.

“When I spoke to the EFL I was heartened by their expressed desire to support the club.

"They have made clear their willingness to consider a number of bids in parallel to minimise delays.”

She added: “It is deeply frustrating that this process has dragged on for so long.

"But reports by some newspapers that Wigan Athletic have been ‘plunged into turmoil’ are wide of the mark.”
