Latics dominated right from the off and deservedly took the lead on 19 minutes, when Tom Pearce's left-wing cross was nodded home by Will Keane.

Pearce was claiming a penalty in first-half stoppage-time when his heels appeared to be clipped inside the box, only for the referee to wave play on.

And Tranmere rubbed salt into the Wigan wounds by going straight up the other end of the field and levelling through ex-Wigan forward Kaiyne Woolery.

Incredibly, there was still time for Latics to restart the game, and regain the lead before the interval thanks to a magnificent 25-yard strike from Harry McHugh on his full debut.

Tranmere equalised for a second time 18 minutes from time through Kieran Morris.

But Latics had chances to go back in front before the full-time whistle, only for Ollie Crankshaw to be denied by Joe Murphy, who also did well to keep out a bullet header from Kyle Joseph.

That meant spot-kicks to decide the winner and, after Tom James scored with the first effort, it was all downhill as Kyle Joseph, Alex Perry and Crankshaw saw efforts saved.
