His side are also the form team in League One, with Saturday’s 3-0 win over Port Vale extending their impressive sequence to only two defeats in their last 22 league games.

However, Caldwell says he’ll be keeping his phone on and ears to the ground in case any last-minute bargains present themselves ahead of the deadline.

“I think you always have to be ready for the unexpected on transfer deadline day,” he told the Evening Post.

“We’ll be ready. If certain things happen, we’ll be ready to act on it.

“If nothing happens, I’m very happy with what I’ve got.

“We did a lot of hard work over the summer, and we’ve since added real quality to that.

“It’s not something we’re actively looking to do, but we will be ready if and when anything happens.”

Caldwell was able to parade his latest two signings - Morsy and Colclough - during the latter stages of the win over Vale, with the game already in the bag thanks to Will Grigg’s hat-trick.

“It was good to get them on,” acknowledged the Wigan boss.

“They’d only had one day’s training, and we didn’t do a lot with them on Friday.

“It’s going to take time for them to get that understanding going with the rest of the team.

“But it was great to have a game like that where we could give them that opportunity to get a feel for the DW Stadium.

“After a full week’s training, and time to bed in to their new surroundings, I’m sure they’ll show us what they can do.”

The win lifts Latics to within two points of automatic promotion with 17 games to go - and Caldwell says confidence is sky-high at present.

“We’ve always believed that automatic promotion is achievable,” he added.

“That’s our aim and we have to keep improving as a club to do that.

“It’s been a long process to rebuild the club from where we were to where we are now.

“But I think with the form in recent weeks a lot of things are coming together.

“The good thing is there’s so much we can still improve on.

“When you’re winning games, and you still see areas to improve on - and the players themselves can see room for improvement - it shows we have a bright future.”
