As things stand, the Slovenian international will return to parent club Newcastle, and may even be playing against Latics in the Championship next term.

But he says he will only be taking fond memories of Wigan with him after achieving his ‘goal’ of promotion from League One.

“When I first came here, I told you the goal, and we have achieved it,” Vuckic told the Evening Post. “And I’m happy I was a part of that.

“I’ve been promoted before with Rotherham, and it’s special. That was through the play-offs, which was a massive achievement.

“But to be champions is even better. It just proves that if you want to work hard at everything, then you will get the results.

“I obviously wanted to play a little bit more, but when the team is winning that’s all that matters, and I’m just happy we got promoted.”

And with wife Midina having given birth to the couple’s first child, Hana, midway through the season, Vuckic will have even more reason to remember their time here.

“Wigan will always be in my heart,” he acknowledged.

“Whatever happens, I can’t forget Wigan, because my baby is a Wiganer, so that will always be there.

“I will be able to tell my daughter: ‘You were born in Wigan, and one day we’re going to go back there and have a look around’.”

Vuckic yesterday appeared to draw a line under his time at Wigan by tweeting: ‘Thank you for the memories’, which prompted a few well-wishing replies from team-mates.

However, it’s understood no decision has yet been made, and the player himself would not be against an extended stay.

“It would be nice to stay because the club has such a good project,” he added.

“The Championship is not the limit. They want to go even higher, and that is very possible.

“The team is young but very motivated, and want to achieve even more.

“It would be a great option for me to stay. We will see.”
