Wait goes on for new manager

Speculation surfaced last night that Mike Pollitt could be leaving his role as Latics goalkeeping coach

Latics fans were still waiting last night to see if the club will have a new manager in place for the weekend.

While betting companies continued to throw names into the debate, the club remained unable to comment on who will take charge for this Saturday’s trip to Cardiff.

Chairman David Sharpe will be considering candidates carefully after saying he was after a manager who could “deliver immediate impact and deliver success in the long-term.”

But one prominent name among the speculation so far, former MK Dons boss Karl Robinson, has said that he has not been approached by Latics.

He was second favourite with Sky Bet last night at 6/4, as odds for Ryan Giggs tumbled, with the former Man United star being listed as the 4/6 favourite.

Assistant manager Graham Barrow has taken charge on a temporary basis in the past – he oversaw losses to Leeds and Millwall after Owen Coyle’s departure, and although he was technically in charge after Uwe Rosler was sacked, Malky Mackay came in before the next game, meaning Barrow didn’t take up matchday duties.

He would probably be the first-choice to take temporary charge as Latics chase a first win in five this weekend, if a new boss isn’t named beforehand.

It also remains unclear if any of Gary Caldwell’s backroom team will leave the club after the Scot cleared his desk on Tuesday night.

Ex-players in first team coach Joe Parkinson and goalkeeping coach Mike Pollitt were among Caldwell’s team, and speculation surfaced last night that Pollitt would leave.
