We don't care about other teams, insists Wigan Athletic star

Joe Williams has revealed Wigan Athletic are adopting a tunnel-vision mentality for the relegation run-in.

And the tough-tackling midfielder knows if Latics continue their remarkable run of results, nothing any of their relegation rivals do will make any difference.

Latics host rock-bottom Luton at the DW this weekend, defending the best record in the Championship over the last eight matches.

Their 17-point return over that period has seen them climb out of the drop zone with 10 matches remaining.

And Williams has called on Latics to ‘finish the job’ of maintaining their second-tier status.

“With the group we’ve got, we should never have found ourselves in this situation,” Williams told the Wigan Observer.

“But we are, this is what happens, and it’s up to us to get ourselves out of it.

“We know where we should be in the table, there’s still a lot of work to do, but we’re confident in our ability to finish the job.

“To be fair, we’ve only ever been worried about ourselves, and what we can control, rather than looking at other teams.

“It’s the gaffer’s been saying...as long as we’re winning, nothing else matters, it’s in our hands.

“As long as we can keep doing our part of the bargain, the rest will take of itself.”

Latics couldn’t be in better spirits, with last weekend’s victory at league leaders West Brom completing a perfect seven days’ work – on the back of wins over Millwall and Reading.

“It was a massive week for the club, we knew we had to get some results on the board,” added the former Everton man. “We’ve always believed in ourselves as a group, despite results maybe not going our way.

“We’ve not always had the best of luck this season, there’s been a few decisions that have gone against us, and a few scrappy late goals.

"But we’ve ironed that out now, and I’ve always said we’ve got the players here, that’s never been in doubt.

“I thought Wednesday at Reading was our best performance of the season. But Saturday at West Brom was just as good if not better.

“To a man we were absolutely terrific, everyone played their part, and we’ve set the standard now.”
