Captain Sam Morsy grabbed the only goal with 17 minutes remaining.

And the visitors could even have won by more, such was their dominance at the Hawthorns.

Latics started fast and almost nosed in front inside seven minutes.

A short corner was played in to Morsy, whose shot was parried out in to the path of Joe Williams, but Sam Johnstone was out in a flash to smother the second effort.

It was then Wigan goalkeeper David Marshall's turn to impress, as he hared off his line to deny Matheus Pereira, who'd held off Tom Pearce.

Latics then created and squandered a gilt-edged opportunity to take the lead when Kieffer Moore's cross from the right was perfect for Gavin Massey.

But the forward's diving header struck the right-hand post, and bounced back out.

Morsy has a shot blocked before Massey pulled another effort wide, as Latics enjoyed the better of the play.

However, the visitors had to stay switched on at the back, with Cedric Kipre blocking a goalbound shot from near his own Latics line, and Leon Balogun doing incredibly well to head a dangerous cross over his own bar,

Marshall made another brilliant save to thwart Callum Robinson as half-time approached, but it was Latics who would have gone off the happier with how things were going.

Latics were appealing for a penalty at the beginning of the second half after Jamal Lowe's cross clearly hit the elbow of a defender, but the officials remained unmoved.

As the hour mark came and went, Michael Jaocbs took over from Massey, and still the visitors looked the most likely to open the scoring.

A sublime ball from Morsy found Gary Roberts, who smashed the ball goalwards with Johnstone happy to concede a corner.

West Brom threatened when Filip Krovinovic fired wide from a good position.

But Latics suffered a major blow when the impressive Balogun was forced to leave the field through illness, with Kal Naismith taking his place.

Latics, though, continued to push forward rather than sit back and play for a point.

And they were rewarded for their positivity when the opening goal finally arrived with 17 minutes to go.

West Brom couldn't clear another corner, and Morsy lashed the ball home from 12 yards, almost ripping the net off the posts in the process.

And Lowe could and should have doubled the advantage in stoppage-time, racing clean through on goal but seeing his shot parried out by Johnstone.
