Both sides had the opportunity to claim all three points, but it was the goalkeepers who came out on top in the first goalless draw of the season in the top flight.
Ashley Barnes brought an excellent save from Sam Johnstone in the first half while Nick Pope did exceptionally well to keep out Grady Diangana, Karlan Grant and Branislav Ivanovic in quick succession after the break.
Chris Wood should have put the away side ahead afterwards when clipping the bar from Ashley Westwood's delivery before Pope preserved his clean sheet when turning Matheus Pereira's attempt around the post.
The Clarets had one last chance to win it late on, but Johnstone came out on top of his battle with Barnes once again when beating the striker's header away.
1. Nick Pope 7
Untroubled for the most part, but did extremely well to keep the ball out of his net when Diangana, Grant and Ivanovic all threatened in quick succession. Turned Pereira's effort around the post late on and showed clean hands as usual.
2. Erik Pieters 6
Another box ticked in terms of positions covered for the Clarets. Competed well at right back, restricting Diangana’s impact, though struggled to build a partnership with Gudmundsson.
3. Kevin Long 6
Did the simple things well and wasn’t overly stretched. Made a number of well-timed challenges when the Baggies threatened to get in behind and dominated his aerial jousts.
4. James Tarkowski 7
Strolled through the game in a typically controlled manner. Did enough to force Grant off-target in the first half and then made a big block to deny Ivanovic, who had looked destined to score, after the break.
