In a game desperately short of any real quality or goalmouth action, both these relegation-threatened sides cancelled each other out.

Latics were indebted to centre-back Cedric Kipre for a sensational last-man sliding challenge in the second period which prevented Harry Cornick racing through on goal.

At the other end, substitute Joe Garner had Wigan's best chance in the 90 minutes, but his tame header was straight at Simon Sluga.

In the second of four minutes, Latics had a gilt-edged opportunity to steal the points.

But Sluga pulled off a magnificent one-handed save to deny another substitute, Michael Jacobs, from 10 yards.

The result sees Latics slip a place in the table to fifth-bottom, but remaining two points clear of the drop-zone.
