Remarkably, Wigan’s triumph over Sheffield Wednesday at the DW Stadium was the first time they have won at home on the opening day in almost 19-years, the last time coming against Scunthorpe United (3-0) in the 1999-2000 season.

Latics fans took to social media to express their delight on returning to the Championship with a victory and hailed the players’ for their fantastic performances in the season opener.

@Adam1105_: “Every single one of those starting 11 were exceptional today. Particularly impressed with all the new lads too.”

Neil Eccleston: “What a great game that was, not enjoyed a game like that for ages, all the space we have going forward too! Fab team performance, Massey and Gibson pip MOTM for me.”

Carl Phillips: “It’s the little stuff. The lady who gives me mint balls, the bloke behind, convinced the world’s against us. The faces - every one different but all expectant and hopeful. The electricity when Crackers finds the net, once, twice -almost a hat trick. God I’ve missed this!”

Latics players also took to twitter to share their thoughts on the win, with the current first-team stars praising the debutants for their efforts on their first respective starts at the DW Stadium.

Captain, Sam Morsy: Great win today the new lads were brilliant after only traning once, great start.”
