Michael Jacobs scored two goals on Saturday

Latics fans were treated to a five-goal thriller on their return to the second-tier, with Paul Cook’s side running out as the victors at the DW Stadium.

Michael Jacobs scored a first-half brace, either side of Atdhe Nuhiu’s leveller, before Nick Powell added a third for the hosts on the hour mark. Fernando Forestieri pulled one back for the visitors in the 66th minute, as Wednesday looked to try and mount a come-back.

Remarkably, Wigan’s triumph over Sheffield Wednesday at the DW Stadium was the first time they have won at home on the opening day in almost 19-years, the last time coming against Scunthorpe United (3-0) in the 1999-2000 season.
