Wigan Athletic boss addresses contract situation

Paul Cook has delivered a ‘positive’ update on the contract situation regarding several of his Wigan Athletic first-team stars ahead of this weekend’s return at Huddersfield.

As things stand, Cook has a dozen players who are only available for the first third of the nine-game run-in.

Michael Jacobs, Gary Roberts, Anthony Pilkington, Joe Garner, Danny Fox, Lewis Macleod and Chey Dunkley – who is still recovering from injury – are out of contract on June 30.

In addition, the loan arrangements for Leon Balogun, Jan Mlakar (both Brighton), Alex Dobre (Bournemouth), Dujon Sterling (Chelsea) and Kieran Dowell (Everton) are also into their last fortnights.

Tentative talks have been held regarding possible extensions to cover the six games in July – but Cook says there’s nothing to report as yet.

And with Latics two points clear of the drop zone – and possible three wins from safety – he’s hoping that won’t become a factor down the line.

“It won’t be a problem if we win the first three games, that’s for sure!” he laughed.

“On a serious note, I’ve always been very much a players’ manager, and I sympathise with everything players go through.

“Players get a lot of criticism at times, and sometimes it is very difficult to be a footballer.

“A lot of people won’t understand some things unless they’ve been involved in football.

“It is such a difficult time for the lads who are coming out of contract. There are a lot of different circumstances involved, and whether clubs want to give them contracts beyond the next few weeks or not.

“Lads will know they’ll be seeking employment elsewhere... so why should they risk their futures for a club that doesn’t want them next season?

“You’ve got to be so careful where you fall on the debate and the argument.

“All I can say is everything we’re going through at Wigan Athletic has been positive, and looks good. Long may that continue.”

However, with some players at other clubs having already made the decision to refuse short-term extensions, Cook admits his team selection for the first three matches may be compromised.

“At the minute we have had conversations with some players,” he added.

“For professional reasons those conversations must remain private.

“But footballers have to be happy and comfortable in what they’re doing.

“If they’re not happy and comfortable then they can’t play – irrespective of anything else.

“Because they won’t bring that positive energy we need around the dressing room.”
