And after substitute Joe Hugill had levelled from the penalty spot just after the hour mark, after James Carragher was fouled in the box, Morecambe were immediately gifted what proved to be the winning goal, when Lee Angol took advantage of a slip by Toby Sibbick to beat Tom Watson, making his debut in the Latics goal.
"Frustrated...angry...it was just a really poor result, and at times a poor performance,” said Maloney. “It was miles away from what we want...miles away.

"And today there were signs of that. In the first half, I thought we disrespected Morecambe...not all of the team, but parts of the team disrespected their opponents.
"When we attacked them, we weren't in the right positions...when there was a long ball, we weren't sprinting back...we just expected to win the ball back, and we didn't.

Skipper for the night McManaman did his best to inspire his side, making an electric start and almost laying on the opener for Carragher, whose shot was blocked.
McManaman then sent in a 25-yard shot with his left foot that Morecambe goalkeeper Harry Burgoyne almost spilled into his own net.

For the rest of the half it was all Latics, with Josh Stones seeing a shot blocked off Matt Smith's pass, and the visitors content to sit on their lead.
With Latics looking increasingly frustrated, they were given a lifeline on 63 minutes when Carragher was tripped in the area, and Hugill rifled home the spot-kick.
However, barely a minute later, it was Morecambe who went back in front, with Angol taking advantage of a slip by Sibbick to slot home past Watson.
