Wigan Athletic boss 'disappointed' by Blackpool booing - 'I don't know what some fans are expecting'

Ryan Lowe admitted he was 'disappointed' with the booing that followed Wigan Athletic's 2-0 home defeat at the hands of struggling Blackpool.

Blackpool gained a stranglehold of the game around the hour mark, when two goals in the space of five minutes proved decisive.

Former Latics strikers Ashley Fletcher and Dale Taylor each scored once and assisted the other, as Lowe's men suffered their first defeat in 11 matches in all competitions.

Having failed to force a save worthy of the name out of Blackpool goalkeeper Bailey Peacock-Farrell, Latics missed the chance to go seventh in the League One table.

A sizeable section of the crowd vented their displeasure at full-time - which Lowe felt was uncalled for.

"The boos were disappointing, yeah," he said. "I don't know what some fans are expecting, to be honest.

"I love the fans here, they are great. But we've just come off an unbeaten run of seven league matches - three wins and four draws - with the squad we've got.

"The expectations might have to be lowered a bit. If we'd have won today, it would have taken us up into the top seven.

"We know we need more quality, but to be where we are at this stage of the season...is quite good...no?

"I think large parts of the fans can see what we're trying to do...there were a few gentlemen who pulled me outside before the game and said it's starting to come together, the work we're doing is good.

"You can see the work we're doing, and we're not getting battered...we didn't get battered by Blackpool...Ian Evatt came over and said it was fine margins on the day.

"So they are disappointing me, the boos and the jeers and whatever else, yeah they are...because I don't think that should be in football.

"Come and support your team...and there were loads here who did that, who came in their numbers. I apologise that we didn't get the result, but the performance was there...we're just lacking a bit of quality."

Lowe also confirmed he will be giving his players Christmas Day off ahead of their next fixture, the Boxing Day trip to high-flying Bradford City.

"We won't be in for training on Christmas Day, because I don't think it's far to have them in on Christmas Day," he added.

"We'll do all of the work on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, and the lads will get to spend time with their families. Because I think that is just as important as me speaking to them.

"We'll get all the information we need to get into them over those three days, and they might do something on Christmas Day from the fitness department.

"Look, these lads have been excellent, and we are what we are. We're not where we'd like to be just yet.

"We're a good team, that's trying to be a very good team, and then an excellent team. We need to back them, get behind them.

"Some people will know and understand football more than others, and understand what we're trying to do, and how we're trying to do it.

"But ultimately we need some help along the way, and that's what we're going to be looking for in January."
