Wigan Athletic boss: It's the final countdown!

'The season starts now' - that's the message from Paul Cook ahead of the 10 matches that will make or break Wigan Athletic's campaign.

This weekend's visit of rock-bottom Luton Town is the first of six matches at the DW Stadium.

Indeed, it's also one of seven fixtures against clubs in the bottom half of the Championship table.

All of which means Latics' destiny is well and truly in their own hands - and the time for talking is over.

"The countdown begins when there's 10 games to go," Cook acknowledged.

"Everyone in the league has pretty much got something to fight for.

"And that shows you just how equal and level the league can be.

"There's still play-off places to be decided at the top end, with so many teams competing to go up.

"And there's probably even more teams involved at the top end, especially the good form of Luton, Barnsley and ourselves.

"Some of those teams wouldn't have been expecting to be involved at this stage, and that's only good for the league."

Latics go into the game defending the best record in the division over the last eight matches, which has seen them climb out of the drop zone for the first time in months.

"We're full of belief at the minute, and I think that's very important for any team," Cook added.

"If you don't believe, you won't achieve.

"We also know we're in for a very tough game against Luton, very competitive, and we're looking forward to it.

"And whatever happens on the day, nothing will be decided - good or bad.

"We'll still have to keep going, because you've seen the kind of results this division can throw up.

"You have to keep going until the job is done, and that is what I'll be getting into the lads for the rest of the season."
