Wigan Athletic captain: 'There’s been talk of a mass exodus of players but a lot of the lads are going to be here next year. We have to make sure this club remains in the Championship...'

‘Captain Fantastic’ Sam Morsy has called for one more effort from his Wigan Athletic band of brothers to see them to Championship survival.

Wednesday promises to be one of the most important days in the history of the club – both on and off the pitch.

Latics know only a win against Fulham – and either Charlton or Luton failing to beat Leeds and Blackburn respectively – will be enough to stay in the second tier.

Hours before kick-off, the 21-day period for prospective buyers to show themselves will expire, with the administrators expected to announce their ‘Preferred Bidder(s)’.

While the ownership issue has plenty of twists and turns to come, the players are only focused on the 90 minutes that will decide their fate.

And Morsy knows it’s time to stand up and be counted...one last time.

“You have to, you have to,” he said. “And as captain of the club, you always have to give extra, give more, and I take that responsibility very seriously. I take what’s happened very personally, and I’ll do everything I can to keep this club in the Championship.

“When you step over that white line, it’s your responsibility, and you have to do everything you’ve got. It’s the job of all the senior players, and to be fair everyone has stepped up and taken responsibility.

“It’s an amazing dressing room, and everyone’s fighting – for the club and for each other’s careers.

“I know there’s been talk of a mass exodus of players this summer, but the reality is a lot of the lads are going to be here next year.

“We have to make sure this club remains in the Championship, and the players remain in the Championship.

“We owe it to each other, we owe it to the manager, we owe it to the fans. Everyone’s played their role, everyone’s done their bit. It’s one more effort and we know we can do it.”
