The 55-year-old was in the technical area for the first time on Sunday at Ipswich - less than 48 hours after being appointed.

While he was pleased with aspects of the performance in the 2-0 defeat - which featured SEVEN players making their league debuts for the club - he is well aware reinforcements are desperately needed.

"We definitely need three or four players," the Latics boss recognised.

“There is a need for some bodies to come in and strengthen in areas because there were a few making their first league starts at Ipswich and it’s difficult.

“It’s a big step up from the Under 23s and then playing a difficult game at Ipswich in your first game.

"We just need to get the right blend of youth and experience to be competitive out there on the pitch, because I think we can have a successful season in this league."

Sheridan also hopes to have right-back Josh Clarke and centre-half Danny Fox available for Saturday's visit of Gillingham.

The duo, who both penned short-term deals last Friday, missed the trip to Ipswich due to injury and fitness issues.
