The 30-year-old, who parted company with Sunderland at the end of last season, has trained all summer with Latics.

He played in all three pre-season games - against Tranmere, Chesterfield and Rangers - and sufficiently impressed manager Paul Cook to be kept on.

Gibson, a former Ireland international, came through the ranks at Manchester United, before moving on to Everton and then Sunderland.

“I am thankful for the opportunity to play for Wigan Athletic and I am determined to repay the manager, chairman and the fans for this chance,” said Gibson.

“I have got myself in good condition and can’t wait to get back to playing regular football.

“Training has been at a really good standard throughout pre-season and ultra-competitive.

“I have played in the Championship and know what a tough league it is, but I sense a really hungry squad here, determined to do well for the manager and the fans.”
