Wigan Athletic 'exit' suddenly in doubt

Kal Naismith’s expected move from Wigan Athletic to Apoel Nicosia could be OFF after the Cypriot club sacked manager Mick McCarthy.

The former Republic of Ireland boss’ spell in charge has come to an end after just two months.

The club confirmed yesterday they had parted company with the 61-year-old, who took charge in November, and assistant Terry Connor after a run of four defeats in a row.

A statement on APOEL’s official Twitter account said: “The company APOEL FOOTBALL (PUBLIC) LTD announces the end of its cooperation with coach Mick McCarthy.

“We wish Mr. McCarthy and his assistant Terry Connor good luck.”

Apoel, one of the biggest clubs in Cyprus, lie 11th in the 14-team competition after a disappointing campaign to date.

They recently signed former Latics striker Joe Garner to an 18-month contract, and had been expected to tie up the capture of 28-year-old Naismith.

The Scot missed Wigan’s recent win at Burton, with acting manager Leam Richardson admitting there were moves afoot for him to leave the club.
