“Every single player – past and present – has been top class to work with and I have been so proud to be a part of the journey we have been on.

“I’d like to thank Paul Cook for giving me the opportunity to be a part of his staff, who are an incredibly talented and committed group of people.

"It’s been a pleasure to work with you all and I’d especially like to thank Leam Richardson, Nick Colgan, Andrew Procter, Nick Meace, Dr. Jonathan Tobin and Adam Smith for your support throughout the last three years.

“The club staff behind the scenes have been brilliant since day one – so many of you have become friends and I wish you all well in the future.

“Finally, I’d like to thank the Wigan Athletic supporters. The staff have always appreciated the backing you have given us and the players.

"Some of the moments we have all shared together will live with me forever.”

He follows manager Paul Cook - and several frontline stars - out the exit door since their relegation to League One.

Paul Stanley, on behalf of the joint administrators, added: “Anthony has secured a fantastic opportunity at the highest level; he’s an excellent coach and leaves with our best wishes.

“Both ourselves and Anthony have turned down approaches from EFL clubs for his services during the past few weeks but the opportunity he has now secured was too good for us to stand in his way.”
