There will be something of a clash with the Run Wigan Festival, which also takes place on that day.

But it’s hoped both events will be able to go ahead with the minimum disruption, with Wigan Council also involved in the planning.

Wigan Run Festival organiser Matt Johnson said: “We are working with the club and Wigan Council to ensure the message gets out to both fans and runners, and that everyone can have a great day.

“It could be great day for Wigan both locally and nationally. We hope that everybody enjoys the run and that Wigan beat Southampton.

“The event will go ahead, as will the match, it’s just a matter of fine-tuning our planning for what’s going to be a big day for Wigan. It’s something we thought might happen and therefore we made plans to deal with it.”

Tickets for the game, which go on sale this Friday, are priced £20 adults, £15 senior citizens, £10 under-18s and £5 under-11s.

“While the timing of both events presents some organisational challenges, we see this as a unique opportunity once again to highlight and celebrate Wigan sport on a huge stage,” added Latics CEO Jonathan Jackson.

“And we are offering our full co-operation and support to the organisers of the event and Wigan Council to ensure both events can be successfully managed on the same day.”
