Wigan Athletic fans asked to stay away from stadium 'show of support'

Wigan Athletic have asked fans to refrain from turning up to the DW Stadium for a proposed 'Meet n Greet' before Saturday's visit of Ipswich.

The planned event was first mooted earlier this month by a fanbase who haven't been allowed inside the stadium for more than a year because of Covid-19.

Plenty of supporters have signalled their intention on social media to show up and help celebrate the impending Bahrain takeover.

But with Covid safety regulations still in place, the club has issued a statement appealing for them to stay away.

The statement read: "To our supporters, firstly, thank you for your continued support throughout this challenging season.

"The way you have stuck with us, continued to be positive on social media and sent supportive messages to us has helped immeasurably.

"We are going to keep fighting in every game we play ahead of an exciting new era for the club.

"It is clear to us how fortunate we are to play for Wigan Athletic and our mantra as a group is to do you proud in every game.

"We’ve seen reports on social media that some supporters are planning to come to the DW Stadium before our match with Ipswich Town on Saturday as you want to show your appreciation to us.

"We really appreciate the gesture and completely understand your continued frustration at not being able to come to the ground to support us on matchdays.

"However, we please ask you do not gather at the stadium and instead continue to show your support from home.

"The safety of Wigan Athletic staff and their families, the officials and the players and staff from our visitors is of paramount importance and COVID-19 still remains a high risk.

"We are closer than ever before to restrictions being eased and enjoying a matchday at the DW Stadium with you.

"We must all continue to adhere to the protocols set out by the government and health authorities to ensure we stay on track for that day to come as soon as possible.

"It really will be an incredible atmosphere that we can’t wait for, but for now we must stay patient.

The statement is signed 'the players & staff from Wigan Athletic FC'.

In addition, the club has also requested for supporters to send in any thank you/video messages, which will be played to the squad ahead of kick-off.

Fans can to do via the club's official WhatsApp on 07766 637391.
