Josh Windass has revealed his pay packet went up when he moved to Wigan Athletic from Rangers - although he insists the Scottish Premier League is not the 'pub league' some dismiss it as.

The 26-year-old - currently on loan at Sheffield Wednesday - joined Latics in the summer of 2018 for around £2.5million.

And as well as the opportunity to test himself in the Championship, Windass says the move also made sense for financial reasons.

Guesting on Open Goal's Keeping the Ball on the Ground podcast, Windass was asked by host Si Ferry: "Where were you on more money, Rangers or Wigan?"

"Wigan," he immediately replied.

However, he also went out of his way to big up the standard of football north of the border.

"I've had so many arguments with boys in English teams about that standard in Scotland," he added .

"They have no idea. They genuinely think it's a pub league.

"They would all sign for Rangers or Celtic at the drop of the hat if they got the opportunity.

"The atmosphere is way better in Scotland, especially in the Old Firm.

"Even at Hibs and Hearts away to be honest. They are better atmospheres than down in England, 100 per cent."
