Wigan Athletic frontmen suffer shock injury KO

Gavin Massey has been ruled out for the rest of the season through injury - and Wigan Athletic team-mate Viv Solomon-Otabor will be lucky to play any part in the run-in.

Both widemen were absent from the side which lost 3-1 at Accrington Stanley on Saturday, with the visitors struggling for any sort of creativity apart from star man Callum Lang.

And boss Leam Richardson reported a gloomy injury update ahead of the 10-game shoot-out that will decide Latics' fate.

"We've had some disappointing news with Gav, and it's just another of the body blows we've had to suffer all season," he said.

"He's got a pretty bad hamstring injury, and he will be out for the rest of the season.

"Viv is still being assessed by a specialist.

"But he potentially could be out for some time as well.

"We're hoping we might possibly be able to manage him in certain games, but it's wait and see on that one.

"It's obviously not great news on the pair of them, but it's the way things have been going.

"They were just starting to get up to speed from having had long lay-offs at the start of the season, and players of that quality are going to be so influential at any club at this level.

"Pace, power, creativity, goals, assists are what every team's looking for, and you take away two players who can do that and it will leave a big hole.

"But that's why you have a squad - albeit a small squad here - and it's up to the rest of the players to overcome and adapt to the situation."
