The defender continues to be linked with a £2m move to Sheffield United, just months after a £10m switch to AC Milan collapsed on transfer deadline day.

Speaking to the Liverpool Echo, Robinson says the players had no inkling the club was about to be placed into administration.

The move brought a 12-point penalty which ultimately relegated Latics to League One.

"It’s definitely the worst way to go down," the ex-Everton youngster said. "It’s a horrible way to break up a group of lads who really get on. I don’t even think we’re angry, we’re just disappointed that that’s how it’s come down to it.

“It (administration) came out of nowhere. There was no-one not getting paid, there was no penny-pinching or anything like that. One day until we go into administration over something, it just all seems really dodgy. I don’t think anyone was prepared for it.

“When the administrators came in to speak to the players... it sounded like a bizarre situation from start to finish, everything they said.

“It’s very unfortunate that something like that can cost something like 75 staff members their job. It’s devastating.”
