Wigan Athletic guest column - Callum Elder

It’s my first promotion in the game, and it’s been a massive achievement for everyone.

Throughout my time here, I’ve got the feeling the fans were yearning to be back in the division above, and they’ve kept us going all season.

To hear there’ll be almost 5,000 fans travelling up to Doncaster for the last game says everything about their support and will give us extra incentive to get the job done and clinch the title.

The 100-point mark was always something we were aiming for.

That’s gone now, but the title is still within reach.

But the draw against Wimbledon was another point on the board, it’s another step in the right direction, and it’s all down to Saturday.

We’ll go to Doncaster now with sights firmly set on the three points, and sealing the title for the fans.

Promotion might be secured but we won’t be resting until the title’s in the bag – a million per cent.

It’s easy to look from the outside in and see we’ve picked up two draws since winning promotion, and think we may have switched off.

But I can assure the fans that’s not been the case.

We’re working hard at training to make sure at the end of the season it’s us who’ll be wearing the medals round our necks and picking up the trophy.

On a more general note, it’s been a dream season for me here at Wigan.

I couldn’t have asked for any more really – to win promotion was the main aim at the start of the season.

We also had a number of special nights during the FA Cup run.

And on a personal note it was great to get on the scoresheet against Bournemouth.

But nothing will surpass the night we had against Man City.

To be involved in that night is something that will live long in my memory.

Nobody who was here that night will ever forget it.

While we all enjoyed the FA Cup run, it was hard to not look at the league table at the same time.

At one point we were four or five games behind Blackburn and Shrewsbury – and that’s an awful lot of points.

I think a lot of credit has to go to the manager for what he did during that time.

He kept reassuring us that if we hadn’t been on the FA Cup we would still be top of the table.

We just had to maintain the focus we’d had throughout the season and we’d be fine.

Credit to the players and the staff for doing that, and we’ve ended up where we wanted to be.
