Wigan Athletic 'have to beat Luton Town', says Joe Williams

Joe Williams has labelled this weekend’s visit of Luton as ‘absolutely massive’ to Wigan Athletic’s survival bid.

Latics have picked up 17 points from their last eight matches to climb two points clear of the drop zone with 10 games to go.

And Williams – who has been outstanding in the recent upturn in fortunes – says the side has a real opportunity to pout real daylight between themselves and the bottom three.

“The Luton game is absolutely massive for us, we have to go and beat them,” he told the Wigan Post.

“Those are the games you have to win in our position.

“There’s no point going to West Brom and winning if you’re not going to follow it up against Luton, especially at home.

“We’ve got to win that one, we’ve got to keep this run going.”

Latics could climb to the dizzy heights of 17th spot in the Championship if they see off Graeme Jones’ Luton, who won the corresponding fixture at Kenilworth Road 2-1 just before Christmas.

And Williams feels that would be more representative of the quality of the squad at the DW.

“We know where we should be in the table,” he added. “But we’ve still got a long way to go.

“There’s still a lot of work to do, but we’re confident in our ability to finish the job.”
