Wigan Athletic loan star makes admission about his long-term future

Jon Mellish is content to bide his time and wait until the summer to see whether his future lies with loan club MK Dons or back at Wigan Athletic.

The 28-year-old utility man has impressed during his time at Milton Keynes, under the watchful eye of former Latics forward Paul Warne.

Wigan Athletic forward makes shock overseas exit - 'brilliant attributes'

Mellish has made 29 appearances for the Dons, and scored his second goal in Monday night's 2-0 victory at Walsall.

The result left the Dons in the third automatic promotion place - and whether they remain there until the end of the season may have a bearing on his next move.

Mellish still has more than two years remaining on the three-and-a-half-year contract he signed when joining Latics from Carlisle United in January last year.

After being brought to Wigan by Shaun Maloney, Mellish fell out of favour when the Scot was succeeded by Ryan Lowe a couple of months later.

While Lowe sanctioned Mellish's move to Milton Keynes last summer, the Liverpudlian's recent sacking has raised the possibility that he could still have a future with Latics under Gary Caldwell.

With so much up in the air, Mellish is content to just play out the rest of the campaign, and see how the land lies both in Buckinghamshire and Lancashire.

“We’ll just get the season done,” he told the MK Citizen, sister paper of Wigan Today. “It’s all I’m thinking about at the moment. What happens in the summer happens, I just want to have a good year.

“I’m really happy here, it’s one of the best dressing rooms I’ve ever been a part of in my time in football, and a lot of the lads will say the same.

“It’s really been enjoyable to come in and be a part of it here at MK Dons. I wanted to come here and be a part of it and be a part of a successful season.”

Latics also have Jonny Smith and Ronan Darcy out on loan in League Two, at Gillingham and Crawley Town respectively.

Maleace Asamoah Jnr has this week joined Shamrock Rovers on loan until the League of Ireland season concludes in November.
