Wigan Athletic to lose highly-rated coach to Chelsea

First-team coach Anthony Barry is set to become the latest departure from Wigan Athletic - with Premier League Chelsea his shock destination.

The 34-year-old has carved out a huge reputation for himself during his three years with Latics, having joined the club in 2017 when Paul Cook took over.

He was narrowly pipped to the Tranmere managerial vacancy earlier this summer, after signalling his intention to make the step up.

And it looks like he's found himself an even bigger gig, after being headhunted by Frank Lampard and Chelsea.

Barry, of course, will be well known to Blues star Reece James, who spent the 2018/19 season on loan with Latics.

His departure would further deplete the coaching ranks at Wigan, with Cook and Under-23 chief Nick Chadwick having moved on in recent weeks.

Cook's long-time No.2 Leam Richardson remains in charge of Latics - at least until a new buyer is found - and has been putting the squad through their paces at Euxton ahead of the new campaign.
