Wigan Athletic old boy open to return

Gary Caldwell would be ready, willing and able to help out his old club Wigan Athletic - if John Sheridan departs for Swindon.

Sheridan has emerged as the shock frontrunner to take over the vacancy at the County Ground created by Richie Wellens' move to Salford City.

He's as low as 2/5 with some bookmakers, with former Latics forward Noel Hunt - who has remained on the Swindon coaching staff - out at 16/1.

And there's good reason for that - Swindon owner Lee Power also controls League of Ireland outfit Waterford, where Sheridan was managing before getting the Latics call at the beginning of September.

It's been a tortuous campaign to date for Sheridan and Latics, who currently prop up the rest of League One and were dumped out of the FA Cup last weekend by non-league Chorley.

Working only to a short-term contract - and having struggled to get across with a sizeable section of the Latics fanbase due to his no-nonsense approach - he may see Swindon as the perfect life raft.

Which would open the door for Caldwell, who has been out of work since parting company with Partick Thistle in September 2019.

But as a former Latics captain and manager - who delivered the League One title to Wigan in 2015-16 - his return would represent a huge boost for a club in desperate need of some good news.

Wigan Today understands Caldwell, 38, would jump at the chance of returning to the role he was relieved of in October 2016 - a decision then-chairman David Sharpe later admitted was a mistake.

And it's believed another former Latics favourite Graham Barrow - also out of the game since leaving Shrewsbury in August - would also be happy to return to Wigan in an assisting capacity.
