The Dons accepted a bid from the Ligue 2 club for the 23-year-old, who started his career with Latics.
However, Cosgrove - who has also been linked with the likes of Stoke and Derby - rejected the opportunity to move to France.
Cosgrove made only one substitute appearance in the League Cup for Latics, spending time on loan out at Barrow, Chorley and North Ferriby.
He joined Carlisle in the summer of 2017, before joining Aberdeen midway through the following campaign.
As a result, it's understood Latics would not be due a sell-on from his next move.
