The Australian enjoyed a successful season on loan from Leicester City, ending the campaign as the undisputed left-back.

With Reece James having completed his contract this summer, Latics are without a senior left-back.

Goalkeeper Christian Walton has already secured a second season-loan from Brighton, while Jamie Jones, Gary Roberts and Alex Bruce have signed fresh one-year deals.

And boss Paul Cook admits Elder remains very much part of his thinking moving forward.

“Everything’s a possibility at this time of year,” Cook told the Wigan Post.

“There’s so much that goes into deals these days – transfer fees, wages, agents, expectations – things do take time.

“And while we’re not ruling anybody in, we’re certainly not ruling anybody out.

“For what Callum’s done at this club last year, he would certainly be on the list.”

Cook has made only three ‘new’ signings for next term – Kal Naismith (Portsmouth), Leonardo Da Silva Lopes (Peterborough) and Reece James (Chelsea) .

“Nowadays the clamour for change in football comes far too quickly,” he added.

“I’m a great believer in loyalty, and I want to stick with the core of players who did so well last season, and give them a chance in the Championship.”
