At present, Paul Cook’s long-time No.2 Leam Richardson is in charge, having remained at the club despite the manager leaving last weekend.

He'll be taking training when the squad - or what's left of it - returns to Euxton after a break of just a fortnight since last term.

Although he's yet to confirm his future plans, Richardson is widely expected to follow Cook into his next job, which would create a vacancy in the Latics hot-seat.

Obviously the club's new owners would have their own ideas about a new man - but that process is showing no signs of coming to a swift conclusion.

And Caldwell is believed to be very interested in coming back to help steady the ship if required.

The Scot captained Latics in the Premier League years before leading them to the League One title in 2015/16 as manager.

He was sacked weeks into the club’s subsequent Championship campaign – and former chairman David Sharpe later admitted not giving Caldwell longer was his biggest

regret.

Caldwell went on to have unsuccessful spells with Chesterfield and Partick Thistle, but is available and desperate to put things right at a familiar place where he enjoyed his best success.

He is not the only former Latic linked with a return.

Earlier this week, Wigan Today revealed Graeme Jones has already been sounded out by some of the parties interested in buying the club.

The 50-year-old, who served the club as a player and later as Roberto Martinez’s No.2, is out of work after leaving Luton in April, and has always spoken of his 'love' for the town and club - and his desire to one day return as manager.
