Wigan Athletic scandal: Stanley Choi - 'I've no relationship with Au Yeung Wai Kay'

Stanley Choi has sensationally claimed he has 'no relationship' with Au Yeung Wai Kay - despite the two being in partnership when taking over Wigan Athletic only last month.

It's the first time Choi has addressed the situation regarding Latics since International Entertainment Corporation - who he owns - offloaded the club to Next Leader Fund Ltd last month.

The new owners were apparently a fund controlled by Mr Choi in partnership with Au Yeung, who soon became the main party.

However, after Choi left the partnership and Au Yeung put the club into administration inside a month, the former has moved to distance himself from his associate.

Choi now says he only met his partner last year through a mutual friend - and he insists there has been no previous or ongoing connection.

“There is no relationship,” Choi told the Financial Times. “The main purpose of the sale was to remove the financial burden from owning this club, which would have been loss-making if we had continued and which the shareholders [of IEC] hated.”

The FT also report the initial sale was prompted because 'IEC had applied to upgrade a hotel to include a casino, and received legal advice that regulators (in the Philippines) would not grant it a licence while Mr Choi part-owned a football club'.
