But he’ll happily bump that to one side to make way for a League One winners’ medal this weekend as Wigan Athletic aim to finish the season in style at Doncaster!

Latics require just a point at the Keepmoat to secure to spot, and repeat the title triumph of two seasons ago under Gary Caldwell. And Dunkley admits winning promotion is only part of the job the squad set out to accomplish last summer.

“It’s been a brilliant season for me, and hopefully there’s another high on this way this weekend with the title,” he told the Wigan Post.

“I’ve had a runners-up medal with Oxford when we came up from League One, but I’m desperate for a winners medal now.

“And that’s not just me, it goes for the whole squad.

“We’re winners, there’s a real winning mentality in the dressing room, and we want to go up to the Championship as champions.

“There’s one more game to go, and we have to pull one more performance from somewhere.

“It’s not just rounding off this season on a positive note either.

“It’s making sure we’re able to take some momentum into next season, and I’ve always been a big believer in ending a season the way you want to start the next one.

“We don’t want to sign off for summer on a downer, we want to end on a high.”

Latics blew the chance to secure the title last weekend when they were held to a 1-1 draw by struggling AFC Wimbledon at the DW.

Dunkley, though, is refusing to be too downbeat.

“We’ve got to look on it as a positive, and we’re still top of the table,” the big centre-back said.

“We’ll go again at Doncaster, and try to put things right.

“We only need a point to mathematically get over the line, but we’d never go anywhere and settle for a draw.

“We go into every game aiming to win, and it’ll be no different at Doncaster.

“One more game, and we want to end the season on a high.”

Dunkley has been one of the unsung heroes of this season’s success, although his form saw him win the League One player of the month award for March and lead to some fans putting him forward as a possible player of the year contender.

“That’s nice, and it’s something you’ll look back on at the end of the season,” he modestly recognised.

“Individual accolades are always nice, but for me it’s only ever been about the team.

“If a defender, I try to do my job, try and help the team keep a clean sheet and hopefully win the game.

“Everything else after that is a bonus.

“I was very flattered the get a player of the year award a couple of months ago, because the dressing room here is jammed packed with quality players.

“But the only award any of us are really interested in is the League One title this weekend.”

Dunkley has also been involved in one of the interesting sub-plots of the season, with his unlikely goalscoring battle with centre-back colleague Dan Burn.

“Me and Dan have been pushing each other, it’s been a nice competition,” laughed Dunkley, who leads the head-to-head 8-7 with one game to go.

“Defending is our bread and butter but we’ve both chipped in with some important goals at the other end.”
