It’s less than a month to go before the transfer window opens and, with Latics rooted to the bottom of League One with a threadbare squad, the campaign will be determined by the level of recruitment.

However, with the EFL showing no signs yet of issuing a green light, Latics are in a situation of limbo – and sleepwalking to the fourth tier.

“Every week at the moment is so, so important,” revealed a source close to the Spanish bidders.

“It doesn’t sound a long time, but it’s a hell of a long time in this situation.

“We need to sit down with all the players, we need to talk to them all, and we need to see who is staying and who is going.

“We need to bring in at least five or six players, we know this. But people keep dragging their feet.”

Captain Joe Garner is the latest senior player to depart, while last week’s draw against Bristol Rovers was head of medical services Nick Meace’s last game before following physio Andrew Proctor out.

“When people are getting offers from elsewhere, they are leaving,” added the source.

“Good people are leaving the club – good people who should still be there.

"And it’s very difficult to replace good people when they leave – on and off the pitch.

"The situation has been going on too long.”
