Wigan Athletic will be left with 'players nobody else wants' - Spanish bidders

The Spanish bidders for Wigan Athletic say they have already made contact with ‘five or six’ players earmarked to bolster the squad in January.

But the continuing uncertainty – while the EFL makes up its mind about whether to give the takeover the green light – is causing their top transfer targets to look elsewhere.

“The investors believe the team needs five or six players to help the young lads who are doing an extremely good job under the circumstances,” revealed a source close to the Spanish bidders.

“They already have established contact with agents.

“But we are getting asked the same question that we are asking others: ‘When?’

“These players are rightly saying that if we can’t guarantee them a job, a contract, then they will get it elsewhere.

“If you wait until the middle of December, the only players left are the ones that nobody else wants.

“Every single team wants to make reinforcements in the transfer market.

"But even though the winter market only opens on January 1, most of the work is done in the month of December.

People are working now to get players in – not from January 1.”

The administrators accepted a bid from a Spanish party more than two months ago.

The EFL is still carrying out its due diligence before deciding whether to approve it.
