Will Christmas come early for Wigan Athletic fans?

Fans have been anxiously waiting to see if the Spanish bid, spearheaded by the Leganes owner Felipe Moreno, will get the green-light.

Senior sources insisted yesterday there have been no stumbling blocks.

The lengthy delay has been put down to the exhaustive legal process, as officials and lawyers wade through documents to try and secure the transfer.

Administrators in charge of the club and the EFL have been trying to try and smooth the process and help where they can. But no snags or red flags have been raised – at least as of close of play today.

And it is hoped the sale of the club could be confirmed in the next few days – raising the prospect of Latics being under new ownership by Christmas Day.

Latics have been in administration since the start of July.

Administrators in charge announced in September they had reached an agreement with a ‘preferred bidder from Spain’ to sell the League One outfit.

But after a long, drawn out process as they carried out due diligence, the EFL rejected the bid as one of the parties didn’t pass their ‘Owners and Directors Test’.

The proposal was subsequently changed, with Moreno underpinning all of the investment.
