Celsius can turn the heat up on rivals on second day of Haydock meeting

With Britain bathing in a glorious heatwave this week, the aptly named Celsius looks set to be one of the big names in action at Haydock Park in their behind closed doors meeting on Thursday.

The track hosts a nine-race card which begins at 12.45pm and culminates at 4.50pm. The action looks fiercely competitive with the seven-furlongs £30,500 Listed EBF Eternal Fillies’ Stakes the highlight at 3.15pm whilst the £15,000 Watch RacingTV In Stunning HD Handicap is another excellent contest over six furlongs at 1.45pm.

Strict social distancing protocols will of course be in place for the meeting and the Racing Post have previewed all of the action with stats and analysis.

Won by the likes of Dance Diva, Opal tiara and Evita Peron in recent years, the Listed EBF Eternal Fillies’ Stakes has a classy roll of honour and this year’s running looks a vintage renewal on paper.

The unbeaten Althiqa made a striking impression when scoring by seven and a half-lengths on her latest start at Newmarket on June 14 and looks to be progressing rapidly for trainer Charlie Appleby.

She is joined by stable companion Spring Of Love who made a winning debut at Newmarket in October. Related to Listed winner Duneflower, she is another intriguing runner.

Stylistique and Wejdan were both well-beaten in a Group Three event at Newmarket in October, but the former showed a tremendous attitude to score at Newbury earlier this month and has to enter considerations for a trainer in Roger Varian who is currently operating at a 21% strike-rate.

Newmarket trainer James Tate has a 14% strike-rate and saddles Under The Stars who finished an excellent sixth to Love in the Group One 1000 Guineas at Newmarket. This is a drop in grade and she is a solid Group performer who can make her presence felt. Boomer was a well-beaten 12th in the 1000 Guineas but had been progressive prior to that run and it would be folly to write off her chances in a fascinating event.

Staged over six furlongs, the £15,000 Watch RacingTV In Stunning HD Handicap (1.45pm) features the ultra-progressive Celsius.

Tom Clover’s stable star has won five of his seven starts since undergoing a gelding operation and is firmly on the upgrade. The four-year-old powered home on the stands’ side rail to score at Haydock on his return to action and is unbeaten at the track in two starts.

Celsius steps up to six furlongs for the first time since 2018, but looks the type who should see out the trip.

Andrea Atzeni partnered the son of Dragon Pulse to victory earlier this month and is back aboard for this assignment. He looks a very exciting sprinter and this looks another good opportunity to showcase his potential.

Motagally represents the in-form Jikm Crowley who rode six winners at Royal Ascot last week. Trained by Charlie Hills, Motagally was a good second over five furlongs at Haydock and given his solid form over six furlongs last season, he is the type to improve again stepped back up in trip.

Lord Oberon is clearly very fragile but is smart on his day. He will strip much fitter for his reappearance on the All-Weather at Newmarket and has finished second a remarkable three times at Haydock for trainer Karl Burke and regular pilot Clifford Lee.

Buridan was disappointing on his final start last year but the lightly-raced five-year-old was progressing nicely prior to that run and is not ignored, whilst Aljady, a smooth winner at Haydock on his debut for Robert Cowell earlier this month looks the type to improve now a trainer has found the key to him and can make his presence felt here.
