Encouragingly for Borthwick, the two athletes directly ahead of her - Scottish record breaker Nikki Manson and Olympic finalist Morgan Lake - also finished on 1.84m.

"It's frustrating to miss out on a medal from a coun-tback," said Borthwick. "But at the same time it's good because I know I jumped the same height they did.

"It's something to work on and going to senior international level, I'll need to be more disciplined.

"I was pleased with how it went, my confidence is through the roof."

Borthwick says she has made big steps over the last few months, during which time she has balanced work commitments with regular commutes to Loughborough to train.

She will relocate to the midlands later this year to start a masters degree in sports psychology in September - by which time she hopes to have completed a successful outdoor season, which begins in May.

"I want to be in the best shape possible for the outdoor season," she said.

"The Olympics is this year and it's probably a little bit of a stretch for me, but I'm only 22 and I've still got two cycles to go. The European Championships is in Paris in August and that's more of a realistic goal."

Wigan coach Trevor Painter was celebrating after one of his athletes, Leigh Harriers' Keely Hodgkinson, won the 800m title - despite being just 17.

She produced the performance of the day to claim gold in 2:04.37.

And Hodgkinson was not the only person from the borough to receive a medal.

Former athlete Jenny Meadows, who commentated on the event, was presented with an upgraded 400m relay bronze from the 2009 World Championships.

She and her team-mates finished fourth in the race but have since been nudged up in the results in the wake of the Russian doping scandal.

Meadows - wife of Painter - also won a bronze in the 800m at the event 11 years ago.
