Wait goes on for British Bulldog recognition

Fans of Wigan's own Davey Boy Smith will have to wait a little longer until their hero is finally inducted into the WWF/WWE Hall of Fame.

The former WWE Intercontinental, WWE European, WWE Hardcore, and WWE Tag Team Champion - better known as the 'British Bulldog' - passed away at the age of 39 in 2002.

He was due to be posthumously honoured at next month's Hall of Fame ceremony ahead of WrestleMania 36, in Tampa, Florida - where his family is now based.

But with the event being switched to the WWE Performance Center in Orlando, Florida, because of the coronavirus pandemic, there's been a change of plan.

Davey Boy's daughter, Georgia, says the induction will hopefully be held during the build-up to SummerSlam, which will be held in Boston, Massachusetts.

She tweeted: "Just a heads up! I have spoken with @WWE and they are postponing the Hall of Fame for a later date, and are hoping to do it for Summerslam (which would be appropriate for my dad) thanks again for all your support! Let’s all stay safe out there."

It would be especially fitting for Davey Boy to be honoured at SummerSlam, given his most famous performance came at the annual shindig in 1992, in front of more than 80,000 people at Wembley Stadium.

After one of the greatest matches in WWF/WWE history, the Bulldog won the Intercontinental title from brother-in-law Bret 'Hitman' Hart, who had been expected to perform the Hall of Fame induction on his behalf.
