The score was locked 4-4 when winger Tommy Makinson launched a drop-goal which struck the crossbar, dropped and bounced into the ingoal area - and the chasing Jack Welsby squeezed past Bevan French to claim the match-winning try after the siren had sounded.

Lam, who had guided Wigan to the League Leaders Shield, said: "It's heartbreaking for everyone involved, I thought it was surreal. Even now I was to rewind the last couple of minutes and have another go at it. There were a couple opportunities to seal the game. It's so weird.

"I thought Saints had a fair bit of the ball and chances to post points and I was proud we defended it time and again. But I don't think Saints looked like scoring and had we executed better - we wouldn't have been in the last minute. I guess we needed some more luck in certain situations."

Wigan had the chance to win the game with less than two minutes to go. Awarded a penalty, Zak Hardaker elected to kick for goal from 45m away, but his effort fell short.

Saints coach Kristian Woolf admits he was surprised Wigan went for two but Lam sticks by the call.

He said: "I think it was still the right decision, Zak was confident, on the flip side if you kick for touch, set up for a dropgoal and miss everyone in the world says 'Why didn't you kick the penalty?'

"The error was we didn't chase the kick. If we'd made the tackle 10m out on Lomax not 30m out, I don't think Makinson would have been in the position to have a go at the dropgoal at the end."
