Winger Tom Davies has impressed the Warriors coach during training and playing for the reserves.

And he is planning to unleash the 19-year-old on Super League in the near-future.

Wigan – currently without injred wingers Joe Burgess, Lewis Tierney and long-term absentee Dom Manfredi – are next in action at home to Huddersfield this Sunday.

They host Hull FC the following Friday.

Wane, who has no injured players returning, has yet to decide whether to tinker with the squad which hammered Warrington 38-16 in their last outing.

Either way, he says Davies is edging closer to a senior call-up.

He said: “Tom is very energetic, he’s full-on, and I imagine we’ll have a look at him (in the first-team) soon.

“He’s a real competitor in everything he does, he carries the ball strong, and he’s earned a chance in the side.

“Whether that’s soon or in a few weeks, he’s certainly getting close, he’s just got to carry on doing what he’s doing.”

Davies would become the third academy-product to break through this year, after wingers Liam Marshall and Liam Forsyth. Two others have made Wigan debuts in 2017 - Frenchmen Morgan Escare and Romain Navarrete, signed from Catalans in the off-season.

The other ‘new faces’, Joe Burgess and Thomas Leuluai, have previously played for the club.

Davies scored a second-half try for the reserves on Sunday, helping them to a 40-10 win against Warrington, and was later praised by coach Darrell Goulding.

“We got what we always get from him,” said Goulding. “He will do millions of carries per game and he works very hard.”
