Davies: Why Giants are a huge threat to Wigan Warriors tonight

That is the frank warning issued by winger Tom Davies as Wigan prepare to head to the John Smith’s Stadium tonight.

The Giants may have only just poked out of the bottom four, but Davies points to their run of form – six wins from their last seven Super League matches – as evidence the table is misleading.

He said: “The new coach has come in and they seem more energised, you see it in their line speed.

“I think Catalans and Huddersfield are more dangerous realistically than some of the top-level teams, because they have that confidence and they know they have nothing to lose.

“They are just going to throw it all out on the field, they’re a big threat and we know what we need to do.”

Wigan, who trail pace-setters St Helens by six points, will remain second regardless of the outcome tonight – Castleford are three points behind them, with Warrington a further point back.

They head over to West Yorkshire in buoyant mood following back-to-back victories over Leeds and Warrington – results which blew away a lot of the negativity which had come with a shaky spell. “Whatever happens, nothing changes here,” said 21-year-old Davies.

“We live in a bubble in that we know where we’re at and what’s going on.

“But you get two bad losses and everyone jumps on the bandwagon of ‘you’re going to get relegated’...two good wins and ‘you’re going to win the league’.

“We don’t let any of that faze us. We just carry on doing what we do.”

Sean O’Loughlin and Romain Navarrete return from injury and suspension respectively, and Shaun Wane admitted earlier this week he may hand a debut to either Sammy Kibula or Oliver Partington.

The Giants were next to bottom when Rick Stone was sacked in March, four days after a 48-10 hammering at Wigan.

His successor Simon Woolford said: “When I got here, we were a long way behind, but the results have been more positive than I expected.

“We’ve got a group of guys willing to buy in to what we want to achieve and to work hard, and when you’ve got a group of guys with that mindset you can achieve results.”

Tonight’s game (7.45pm) is not being televised – it was brought forward to accommodate a Little Mix concert.
