Reports suggest the former Warriors half-back has agreed a deal to return to the club where he played 119 games between 2001 and 2004.

The former Papua New Guinea ace is currently working with junior players at Sydney Roosters, where his 20-year-old son Lachlan plays. It is believed Lachlan, who played his first game of rugby league for Wigan St Patrick's, would follow his dad to Wigan if he returns as coach.

The Wigan Observer reported last Tuesday that Lam, 47, was a front-runner to take over the head coaching job at Wigan with another former star Shaun Edwards also a favourite.

Edwards is now thought to be out of the running, for next year at least, due to his rugby union World Cup commitments with Wales.

Lam has previously been in the running to take over at Wigan, touted as a replacement for the sacked Ian Millward in 2006 before Brian Noble took charge. He also applied for the vacant coaching position at the end of 2009, losing out to Michael Maguire, and spent a year coaching Warriors under-20s after he finished playing.

And Lam has coached PNG as well as serving as ex-Wigan boss Stuart Raper's assistant at Cronulla . He assisted Wayne Bennett during his stint at St George Illawarra.
