Ex-Wigan Warriors winger Christian Wade signs new rugby union deal with Chris Ashton's try-scoring record in sight
Former Wigan Warriors winger Christian Wade has signed a new deal to remain with rugby union side Newcastle Red Bulls for another season.
Following a brief spell in rugby league with Wigan, Wade returned to rugby union after the Super League season concluded last year.

Wade initially signed a deal with the Red Bulls for this campaign, but the 34-year-old has now committed to the club for another season in 2026-27.
“I’m really excited to continue this journey with Newcastle Red Bulls,” Wade said.
“From the moment I arrived here, I’ve loved the energy around the club and the support from our fans.
“My wife has been part of this journey with me long before the NFL, and we both really enjoy the lifestyle here in Newcastle. It’s a great place for us, on and off the field.
“I’m looking forward to the challenge ahead, and bringing my experience, leadership and personality to help make this team the best it can be.”
Wade is chasing down the all-time PREM Rugby try-scoring record, sitting just eight behind former Wigan star Chris Ashton, who is on a tally of 101 tries.
The former British and Irish Lions representative has enjoyed a decorated playing career, having played three sports professionally. He has spent the majority in union, while he spent three years in the NFL with the Buffalo Bills.
Wade came over to league midway through the 2025 campaign on a short-term deal with Wigan, scoring two tries in two first-team appearances, as well as playing several reserve games before returning to union.
"Christian has been a really positive influence on the squad since his arrival in December, and the way he looks after himself is an example to all players,” said Newcastle’s sporting general manager Neil McIlroy.
“He has been unlucky with a couple of injuries which were outside of his control, but in the games he has played, he has made plenty of positive contributions.
“For such a renowned finisher, he is very unselfish in the way he goes about his work, and he has been brilliant in sharing his experience with our younger players.
“He still has a big contribution to make for us as we look to advance this club, and I’m really happy that he has agreed to another season.”
