First day in new job for 'excited' ex-Warriors boss Shaun Wane

The Grand Final-winning coach begins his new role as Scotland RU's high performance coach.

He will attend a camp at St Andrews, little more than a week after Wigan's Old Trafford triumph - and just three days after clearing his office at the Warriors' Orrell training ground.

Wane said: "I'm excited, it's something new - I'm nervous but it's a good nervous.

"I've never been in that position, I've never worked in that sport so I'm out of my comfort zone.

"But I'm hungry for it.

"I need to challenge myself and challenge others - it's perfect for me.

"There are already certain things I'm confident I can make a difference on.

"But I'll go there, I'll be asking questions, 'Why are you doing this? Why can we not do this?'"

Wane's own experience in union is limited to playing for Orrell for four years as a junior.

But he has watched and studied the code, as well as visiting several professional set-ups and meeting with coaches over the years.

Wane has spent the last few days tying up loose ends and dealing with his other business ventures, so much so that he admits the Warriors' title triumph has yet to sink in.

But he added: "I finished exactly as I wanted, winning a trophy.

"The conversations I had with the players afterwards were very emotional and I'll always remember them.

"I've got a lot of good memories. After the Grand Final - and the semi-final - a lot of fans gave me a clap, and I appreciated it, that will stay with me forever.

"While I'm excited about my new role I'm obviously going to miss Wigan.

"But I said after the game I feel I've done my bit, I've done a good job, and I do believe that."
