The flyer has been working hard during the pre-season on his backfield qualities.

And after training against Cronulla winger Valentine Holmes, he is even more confident his fast-feet can compensate for his lack of size.

Marshall explained: “While we were in Australia, we had an opposed session with Cronulla.

“Valentine Holmes is not the biggest guy but the way he carried the ball - using speed and footwork to get on the outside of players - was a big thing for them, and that’s something I hope I can try and do.

“I’m never going to be as big as Ryan Hall or Jermaine McGillvary, but there are different ways of utilising what you are good at.”

Marshall, who has scored five tries in Wigan’s first three games, wants to complement his finishing skills with an ability to make plenty of early ground for his side.

He said: “That area is not my main asset, but I’ve worked on it a lot over pre-season.

“In the last couple of years, the wing position has been transformed, and wingers have a massive job to get the sets started.

“Carrying the ball well, getting quick play-the-balls and making metres is a major part, if you can’t do that you’re pretty redundant as a winger.”

Wigan face Widnes this Friday in their first home game of the season.
