1. Liam Marshall's audacious solo effort has already been labelled by Super League as a 'try of the season' effort.

The winger fielded a restart and then hacked the ball ahead from his own 10m line. He chased, regathered and blazed away from the covering defence to score (see embedded video).

"He was sensational," said coach Adrian Lam. The winger, given the nod ahead of Joe Burgess now Dom Manfredi is fit-again, finished with a hat-trick and had a fourth ruled out for a forward pass.

2. Marshall's first two tries came during a key period in which Wigan flipped the game on its head.

Huddersfield were good value for their 10-4 lead approaching half-time when Aidan Sezer was sinbinned for a high tackle on Thomas Leuluai, which forced the Kiwi out of action.

Wigan went for the throat and racked up four tries while the marquee halfback was absent - three before the break, one just after - to take a firm grip of the contest. From the 35th minutes on, they scored 38 unanswered points.

3. Last year, Wigan had only three wins by Easter. Now they have already chalked up four from five and their superior points-difference has them ahead of Castleford at the top of the Super League table.

These are early days, of course, and nobody should get carried away but to look at the issues facing their other play-offs rivals - Hull FC and Warrington, for starters - it's a nice position to be in.

4. George Burgess returned to the side, following a poor debut cut short by injury, and showed just why Wigan brought him on board.

He was powerful and dominant during two spells and looked fit, despite two lay-offs in the space of six months.

The ex-Souths prop crowned a fine display with the final try, and a tip of the hat to fellow front-rower Ollie Partington who showed nice footwork to also cross.

Sam Powell also impressed while young half Harry Smith relished the extra game-time.

5. New England coach Shaun Wane was at the Galpharm to see his former club put the Giants to the sword.

There was much to admire from Wigan's display. At their best, they had swagger and invention and sharp execution, and energy throughout.

Perhaps the most satisfying part was how, when pinned into their own half during a spell in the first-half, they were able to absorb and repel everything thrown at them.

To limit their previously-unbeaten opponents to one try means they have leaked just eight tries in five matches so far. Their style is built on a solid foundation.
